The Double Down Saloon played host to the
punk rock thrashing band The Gashers as well as L.A based band Ingenue
and Tiger Sex in their first ever show on Friday April 19th.
The first artists to take the stage was
L.A band Ingenue. They brought a taste and desire in me for nineties
music to return. The bands set began with a song called "Ambien"
reminiscent of The Breeders. The song had a fun rock feel to it and
featured good harmonies. My first feeling of this band was how
impressive their drummer Elena Castro had been. The unique drum beat in
"Anemone" as well as her drum work throughout the song and in "Sunshine"
became a standout in the bands performance. The best vocal performance
by the band came on the song "Super Swell" by lead singer Lauren Doran.
When they played the song "Roxy" the guitar part was very groove driven
and worked well with what I thought was the best bass performance of the
night by Christina Ownby. The influences that seemed most present in
the bands performance was The Breeders, Alanis Morrisette, Nirvana and
Weezer. One influence I saw a hint of that I'm not sure if it was
accidental or on purpose was Teenage Fanclub. I am looking forward to
seeing where the influences of the band takes them in the future. The
second band to take the stage was Las Vegas band The Gashers. A very
aggressive and energetic punk rock band that ignited excitement in the
crowd during the entire set. All three members of The Gashers shared
lead vocals while still playing instruments during their performance.
The best part of their performance came in any song where Jason Hansen
and Sandra Moreno traded vocals. Jason having loud damning vocals mixed
with Sandra's higher vocals meshed well in "Justice" and "Panic". Tiger
Sex ended the night with a performance that did not look like it was the
bands first show. The lead vocalist was definitely the standout in her
bands performance. She danced suggestively placed the mic stand between
her legs in a suggestive manner, reminding me of Joan Jett, Chrissie
Hynde, Lita Ford and Wendy O'Williams. In the beginning of the set one
of the audience members started moshing with people and was thrown out
by the bouncer for his over aggressive actions. Tiger Sex did not let it
bother her and she kept singing like it hadn't even happened. The only
downside to the bands performance was the lack of a performance by her
band. All of the attention was on the lead singer and I found myself
forgetting that she had anyone on stage with her. Hopefully the band
develops more and isn't overshadowed by their lead singer. What ever
happens with this band their performance was memorable
A night of angry punk rock, hard rock
and alternative rock excited the Double Down Saloon. I'm looking forward
to hearing more music from each of these bands.
